Financial Aid Services

Financial Aid Programs

The University of Southern Nevada Financial Aid Services has many federal, private and institutional programs. Financial aid is considered any resource that can help pay for college. Students must apply for financial aid using the FREE Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Aid is awarded on first come first served basis while funds remain.

Scholarships

Several scholarships are available to students attending The University of Southern Nevada. You must complete the FAFSA application and check with the program you are interested in for deadlines.

Grants

Grants are free money and do not have to be repaid. Normally grants are awarded to students with high financial need. Federal formulas determine who can be awarded these grants. The most common grant is called the Pell Grant. You must complete the FAFSA application to determine eligibility.

Loans

Loans are funds that are borrowed and must be repaid. There are several different types of loans for students, including federal and private.

  • Stafford Loans are federal loans for Undergraduates and Graduates and is based on financial need.
  • Plus Grad Loans are available for Graduate Students and is based on credit. Loans are available (Plus Loans) for parents of Undergraduate students, eligibility is based on credit.
  • Private Student Loans are also available based on credit.

Plan carefully if you choose to borrow a student loan. If you are offered a student loan as part of your financial aid package, you have the option to accept, reduce or decline the loan. While loans may be necessary in order for you to attend college, students should borrow conservatively.
